New Iveco Stralis keeps J.T. Matthews beaming thanks to regeneration-free Euro VI HI-SCR technology
Monday 19th October 2015
West Midlands roofing-materials specialists J.T. Matthews has made it a hat-trick after taking delivery of a new Iveco Stralis Hi-Street 6x2 rigid featuring Iveco’s patented HI-SCR engine technology. The new truck joins two similar Stralis vehicles currently operated by the roofing supplier, which form part of an eight-strong fleet of commercial vehicles.
The company – which has enjoyed a long-term business relationship with Iveco spanning nearly 30 years – will use the vehicle to transport roofing materials to customers within a 50 mile radius of its five acre site in Bilston.
The new Stralis (AD260S31Y/PS), in its distinctive red and silver livery, is ideally suited to making urban deliveries thanks to a rear-steering axle which provides optimum manoeuvrability – essential for negotiating building sites and residential areas with restricted access. The truck is fitted with an aluminium dropside body and HIAB crane, mounted on Iveco’s versatile and durable chassis which features a ladder frame construction, with rolled steel side members and riveted and bolted cross members.
Phil Barker, Managing Director of J.T. Matthews, says: “We take a lot of pride in our vehicles and the latest Iveco styling really turns heads. We took our first Iveco in 1988 and they’ve formed the mainstay of our fleet for many years – despite working them hard, we enjoy superb reliability.
“Our drivers also have great respect for the Iveco brand and we take their opinions seriously – at the end of the day they are the ones in the driving seat.”
The vehicle is powered by Iveco’s highly efficient Cursor 9 engine, which plays a key role in delivering a low total cost of ownership. It is capable of producing up to 310 hp between 1,675 and 2,000 rev/min, and up to 1,300 Nm of torque between 1,100 and 1,675 rev/min.
A key feature of the Cursor engine range is Iveco’s HI-SCR technology, which meets stringent Euro VI emissions limits without the need for exhaust gas recirculation or the resulting regeneration process commonly required. This means productivity is increased as HI-SCR requires neither driver involvement nor downtime from active regeneration, meaning no fuel is utilised to burn particulates and no energy is lost to cool down exhaust gases.
The driveline also includes the proven 12-speed fully automated EuroTronic transmission as standard, which is manufactured for Iveco by ZF.
With a fleet policy of having a dedicated driver per vehicle, the new Stralis Hi-Street is expected to cover approximately 60,000km a year working a six-day week. It will be serviced under a five year repair and maintenance plan through supplying dealer Guests Truck and Van, which is conveniently located just three miles from the roofing company’s premises.
J.T. Matthews is a major supplier of roofing materials with more than 60 years’ experience in the sector. It can supply a large range of materials from roofing felt to slate roof tiles, sealants and soffits.
