Iveco Stralis Active Time tractors make light work of bulk tipping
Iveco has signed a key conquest deal with West Thurrock-based Foley and Miles, delivering the first ever Iveco’s into the company’s 49-strong heavy truck operation.

Foley and Miles placed an order for six Stralis Active Time (AT) 6×2 tractor units after seeing an opportunity to take advantage of the Stralis’ ultra competitive unladen weight.

Specified with a high-roof AT cab and fixed passenger seat, super single steer tyres, sliding fifth wheel, PTO and a wet-kit, the vehicles will operate with bulk aggregate tipping trailers carrying up to seven full loads per day.

They will be used for the bulk movement of granular material, from ash to aggregates, and sand to shale.

Kevin Miles, Managing Director, explains: “In our business payload is king, so when Stormont Truck & Van highlighted the opportunity to increase payload potential with the Stralis we were immediately interested. “When you are carrying as many loads as we are per day, the ability to transport that little bit more each time means you are gradually reducing vehicle movements, which in turn has a direct impact on the service we offer to customers and our ability to operate efficiently. “The new Stralis’ might weigh less than our other tractors, but they have already proved during their first weeks in service that they are no lightweight when it comes to hard graft,” he adds. Stormont has put in place a special arrangement enabling the Stralis’ to be supplied on a five year Iveco Elements repair and maintenance agreement, under its management, but with servicing undertaken by Pullman Fleet Services – located close to the customer’s operating centre and an existing supplier.

Like all vehicles in the company’s fleet, these latest deliveries have been fitted with GPS tracking and in-cab communication systems which monitor every aspect of the delivery process.

Power is provided by FPT Industrial 10.3 litre Cursor 10 engines which produce up to 450 hp between 1,550 and 2,100 rev/min and up to 2,100 Nm of torque between 1,050 and 1,550 rev/min. The specification also includes Iveco’s automated EuroTronic transmission, continuing the trend Iveco started with the launch of the original Stralis in 2002, when it became the first heavy truck to be fitted with an automated gearbox as standard. Established in 1993, Foley and Miles offers customers a 24/7 service using an entirely Low Emission Zone compliant fleet. In addition to its articulated bulk tippers, the company operates three- and four-axle rigids with cranes, artics with flatbed trailers and artics with crane-mounted flatbeds. This allows it to offer a service which includes brick and block haulage as well as the general movement of palletised goods, small plant and railway-related products.
