Soapbox ‘Racing For Life’
Young and old, male and female, come together to join in the wonder that is The Stone Festival Soapbox Derby.
Sherwood and Guest Truck and Van were delighted to sponsor Fergus Hulme, Alex Finlow and Lewis Finlow with their Iveco Stralis Soapbox entry ‘Racing For Life'. The three teenagers were racing to support Cancer Research UK. A charity close to their hearts as Fergus’ Aunty, Judith Green, died from cancer last year and Alex & Lewis’ Mother, Sheri, has recently been diagnosed with cancer.
Taking 1st position in the Junior Race, the boys did themselves proud. Fergus’ Dad, Jeremy Hulme, Sherwood Truck and Van’s New Business Development Manager in Stoke, commented “it was one of the proudest things I have ever had the pleasure to be associated with. So glad we had the idea. I must pass sincere thanks to Commercial Body Specialists and Planit Signs, for their unfaltering contribution to the whole project, without which it would never have happened – thank you“.
?The first SoapBox Derby in Stone since 1969 was held on Wednesday 8th June this year. Running from the top to the bottom of High Street, there was a carnival atmosphere throughout the evening. 30 teams of 3 individuals each pitted themselves in a race of both speed, dexterity, engineering capability, skill and of course the much heralded ability to make the judges and audience whoop with delight at their imaginative introduction prior to the "Off".
The Market Square held the winners’ podium and had a showcase area for after the race, where the competitors displayed their Soapboxes (or what might be left of them after the run!) for all to see! Late night shopping, cafes and bars were open to make it a truly spectacular summer night’s entertainment and best of all, it was FREE!
